Lake Davis Pike Eradication Project Update- FYI 17 Years, 4 Months ago
Lake Davis Pike Eradication Project Update
September 21, 2007 3:00 p.m.
Portola Field Office
Project Information Line: (530) 832-4754
After last week’s successful treatment of the creeks flowing into Lake Davis, the California Department of Fish and Game plans to begin a second stream treatment on Monday, Sept 24. The reservoir treatment is scheduled for Tues Sept 25 and Wed Sept 26. The reservoir is anticipated to be at 41,000 to 42,000 acre-feet at that time. The project uses a liquid rotenone formulation, CFT Legumine.
Releases from the dam into Big Grizzly Creek will be shut off for five days when the reservoir treatment begins. Current plans call for the dam to remain closed for up to 45 days to allow the rotenone formulation compounds to degrade naturally in the reservoir. Today, DFG crews netted about 200 trout in Big Grizzly Creek immediately below the dam and moved them further down the creek where incoming springs will provide sufficient habitat after flow from the dam is shut off. About half the fish were 8 inches or larger in size, and about two thirds were brown trout, and the remainder rainbow.
After the first treatment in the creeks upstream of Lake Davis, several hundred dead pike were observed - mostly young-of-the year, one-year-old fish, and a few 2-year olds. In some areas, pike were the only fish found – demonstrating how pike can dominate an ecosystem. This summer, DFG field crews did intensive electrofishing in the creeks to reduce the numbers of pike and help keep them from spreading further up the streams. Nearly two thousand pike were removed by that control method.
The dead fish pose no danger to wildlife, such as herons and coyote, which are scavenging in the area. The water is safe for wildlife to drink.
The stream treatments are carried out using 5-gallon drip stations in flowing water, while crews using backpack sprayers and trailer-mounted spray rigs treated standing water and backwater areas. Screens are placed at the mouths of the tributaries to prevent any pike from re-entering the creeks.
The U.S. Forest Service closure is still in effect, with check-in points to the project area on Grizzly Road and the upper end of West Street. Please contact Lori Wood at (530) 394-8027 or (530) 836-7171 if you live within the project area and have not yet obtained a pass for your vehicle. Passes can also be obtained from the Beckwourth Ranger District Office.
Post-treatment stocking will begin when Lake Davis is free of any of the rotenone formulation compounds, which is anticipated to occur before the reservoir freezes

over. The majority of the stocking will occur in Spring 2008, with several hundred thousand fingerling, sub-catchable, catchable, and bonus size rainbow trout, along with fingerling brown trout.
In addition to the information provided in the EIR/EIS for the project, an analysis of the seven lots of rotenone being used in the project has been conducted. The information is available at www.dfg.ca.gov/lakedavis. Information on project monitoring results will be posted on the Lake Davis website as they become available.
Project Information kiosks are set up in the Portola area at Leonard’s Market, Portola City Hall, Portola Post Office, the DFG Office at 209 Commercial Street, Crocker Station on Grizzly Road, Grizzly Store and at the checkpoints on Grizzly Road and West Street. In addition, updates will be posted on the web at www.dfg.ca.gov/lakedavis. For further information call the Project Information Line at (530) 832-4754.

Thanks for this report, I was wondering how that treatment was going.

Thanks for the update. I can't wait until Davis returns to the lake it once was pre-pike!

And I can't wait to fish it, period. Never been there in all these years...

I sure hope they're able to get all of the pike this time around. They, the Forest Service & the Dept of Fish & Game, sure seem to have done everything possible to implement this treatment. I heard from a friend the other day they had found pike as far as 10 miles up one of the feeder creeks at the lake.

I hate to admit it but I can't help but feel this isn't going to be the final word on the pike in Davis. It just seems there are to many variables from the size of the lake, to existing springs within the lake, side channels & pools within the feeder creeks, the reproduction rate of pike and finally the durability of the damn pike themselves.

And if it doesn't work it would appear that draining the lake would be the only alternative left. Hopefully it won't come to that. Were that to happen I've heard it would be 4 to 7 years to reestablish the lake depending on weather water content in the years to follow.

The short term outlook for the lake should be great. Following the treatment in 97' with the number of fish planted the fishing was beyond belief - you just needed to be able to hit the water with what ever you were fishing. Of course the size of the fish, the challenge and the fighting ability weren't up to traditional Davis standards but it was encouraging to see how quickly the lake rebounded.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully we can get our good old Lake Davis back - it used to be one hell of a fishery. Thanks for the report troutnut.

Sonny, the black lab, ran ahead to make sure there were no gophers or jackrabbits in the way. If you don't give a dog a specific job, he'll improvise one for himself and it will invariably be fun. There's a lesson there.

The SOB's karma has caught up to him and he's at the bottom of some lake or river acting as fish food.
