Re:How many flyrods have you broken over the years and how? 17 Years, 3 Months ago
I've been lucky too. However, I remember one time, I was so pissed after not catching anything on the Russian river, I just put my rod in the back of the car and drove off. When I got home, I realized that the middle section of the rod had snapped. It ended p costing me $45.00.

Welll...Three - that I can remember...The first was when I was a kid, a friend cast a spinning rod over me and broke the tip of my rod off. The second was when I broke the tip off my rod while putting the rod back in the tube - at a Redding Rod Bash (of all places!) - No, it wasn't the rod I was building. The third was a brand new rod, first time I'd used it, hadn't even made a (fishing) cast with it, snuck up to a nice hole, was hiding behind a tree...slipped, smacked the rod against a branch of the tree, and broke it. That was the most frustrating...

I hinged an early Scott STS at the butt section when the ferrule split 12 years ago the end of next month (I'll answer where as well) while fishing on Henry's Lake off of Staley Springs and watching the snow melt on the surrounding mountains. Since then I always check my ferrules to make certain that they are tight. Scott built a new section for $30 or $40 including shipping but I had to send the whole rod back to them to size out the ferrule. It is still one of my sweetest rods to this day.

Been around quite few that were high sticking their rods with fish on and can recall the sound of a .22 as they went past extreme while trying to land the fish. It was always the butt section just above the cork that gave way.

I heard of someone breaking one a Silver and Losing the..... 17 Years, 3 Months ago
tip on a rod loaned to him, both on the Kisaralik over the span of a few days. There were five rods broken or lost on that trip.......seemed to be a recurring theme for Alaska. Heard of another going over the side during a nap. But better than breaking airplanes!

I have a knack..... 17 Years, 3 Months ago
I am almost afraid to list them....

1. 8 wt Cabela's Stowaway - poked the gunwale of a boat and it broke - bought another.

2. 5 wt Winston LT. Guide pulled on line and broke tip. 2nd day I fished the rod

3. 5 wt Cameron and Smith - practice casting and split the second ferrule. a week before leaving for NZ - wrapped ferrule with kevlar thread and epoxied it. Worked.

4. 6 wt Cabela's Stowaway - broke tip off the night before leaving for NZ - brought it and had a new tip glued on in Christchurch

5. 5 wt Winston LT - put it in the back of my truck and something fell on the tip

6. 5 wt Cameron and Smith - loaned it to a first timer. He broke the tip off and never knew it.

7. CAS rods 8 wt - set up on a rock in the T- UC replaced

8. Pastor TD 7/8 wt - pinched in a Creel census box lid - TD Repaired

9. Same CAS Rods 8 wt a year later - did it again UC replaced but used new brand of blank !!

10. Pastor TD 7/8 wt - set up on a fish in the T !! TD Replaced the whole butt section, handle, inlays...

11. 8 wt Cal West Rod - over the side on the Kisaralik (Sep 05)

12. Replacement 8 wt Cal West rod - left on roof of truck - Rt 1 on Mem day weekend. See 'Smithereens" (May 06)

13. 5 wt Winston LT - Left on roof of truck in Cedar Grove - 2 cars ran over multiple breaks. July 07 - haven't got it back yet

14. Next Replacement Cal West 8 wt - popped a guide liner on the Kisaralik ( Aug 07)

!! I broke those two rods on the same day, fishing with Lonnie Boles on the T - I have never seen anybody laugh as hard as he did when I broke the second rod and just started laughing....

That is all I remember... Anybody wanna sell me a rod with a lifetime guarantee????

The Winston folks have alweays repaired my rod.

Brett Cameron Smith replaced the 5 wt twice. I still fish it.

I live in the city, but don't fit in,
You know it's a pity the shape I'm in.
Well, I've got no home, and I've got no choice,
Oh Lord have mercy on a country boy!
