If you could go anywhere out of the country to fish.... 17 Years, 4 Months ago
...where would it be?

I want to travel next year, and I am trying to come up with some ideas.

The only criteria:

-has to be out of the country
-has to have fishing
-has to be fairly reasonable in price

I have considered New Zealand, but I know there are lots of options. So where would you go?

Dawn,

South Island New Zealand in January, although somewhere on the southern end of South America is a VERY close second. The thing about NZ is it is pretty easy to do it cheap - lots of hostels, Motels are reasonable, no language barrier (well almost none, the offer to give you a wake up call might surprise you). You will pretty likely not have a lot of 15 fish days, more like 5 or 6, but they'll be beauties. Lots of opportunities for backpacking in to real good water, and so on. Let's talk if you think you might want to go there.

Advice I can offer is start the process of your Passport NOW... Unless you already have one.

I personally would go to Argentina... Because you can fish & backpack there!

Patagonia, either Argentina or Chile 17 Years, 4 Months ago
I've been dreaming of a trip down there for years. I've been to Chile. It's spectacular, but alas, I wasn't fishing then.

Check with Pit Boss. He's the expert and has lots of good info. (It would help if you knew some Spanish.)

Ojalá que tenga un buen viaje.

Ciao,

My favorite thing about fishing isn't the catching, but just being there - Beerfly

There are some good suggestions here Dawn. I would discard Canada only because it is so doable at any time. If you have the time, some cash, and a desire to really see something different, then you need to get off the North American continent.

Mexico is about the same story. Additionally, you would need to gear up with a lot of new (and fairly expensive) equipment to make that trip as it would be mostly salt water, bigger fish type of conquest.

New Zealand is an excellent choice, and as pointed out, the language barrier is non-existant for all intents and purposes. The fishing is excellent and you can easily travel around the country.

However, if I were in your position, I would give my most serious consideration to South America, specifically Chile or Argentina. The fishing is fantastic in a lot of areas, you can travel, if you are adventerous, cheaply if not quickly, and there are so many different things to see and experience that you will be amazed. The people are friendly, the different foods are a big part of the experience and the fishing can be fantastic. I know that folks here in the US are concerned about language barriers, etc. Bull, just get out and have a blast. I have travelled all over the world and if you keep a positive attitude, are friendly and willing to use a phrase book/dictionary and not demand to speak in English, the people will go out of their way to give you a hand. Adapt to their customs, traditions, foods and such and enjoy. I envy you the chance you have.

I recommend watching the Aegmedia films: Troutbum Diaries:Patagonia, and their latest Kiwi Camo: New Zealand! Aeg makes awesome movies in the style of snowboard/skier flicks.

It will make you want to go to those places even more! (if thats possible).

And to stay on track if i could go anywhere right now id try to go to argentina/chile for a few months.
