Peru 17 Years, 4 Months ago
Peru should be high on your list. Get into the Andes near Machu Pichu and fish big crawfish and stonefly patterns for rainbows in the Urubamba, Apurimac, or one of the other bigger rivers, then work your way into the Amazon, fishing as you go. The fishery changes dramatically with elevation (as does everything else). By the time you get to the basin floor you have long left the trout for payara, arauana, pacu, pirhana, peacock bass and innumberable other species. You can get to Cuszco for pretty cheap and once there arrange travel with the locals. They'll have no idea what you are talking about but that's part of the fun. Over time and some beer and coca tea you'll get your point across. You'll eat a lot of dust, spend days waiting for plans to evolve, and more time watching plans unravel. You'll meet some crazy people. It's what an epic fishing trip is all about. It's nice to know a little Spanish.

hmmm...well - I wouldn't mind going to Mongolia for the Taimen...sounds pretty crazy so why not? I mean, who wouldn't want to catch something like this:

Another idea might be warm water stuff...Costa Rica? Argentina might be good. I talked with Pit Boss on the AK trip about that - might be the thing to do!

You could head up to the Northwest Territory to Wignes and try your hand at big northern and lake trout. Airfare and cost of the outpost cabins really are'nt that far out of scale compared to other fishing destinations.

Then there is:
Labrador for B.I.G. Brookies;
Russia as G.M. had mentioned;
Seychelles for bones, wahoo, tuna, and barracuda;
British Isles for atlantic salmon;
Africa for Nile Perch;
Amazon Basin for Peacock Bass and other crazy toothy critters;
Coastal Australia.

What do YOU want to fish for?

Personally, I want to go sit on an island in the south pacific just soaking in the warm water and sun, working on a change in attitude and lattitude!

I hardly get to go fishing these days IN the country! The US $ isn't doing so hot at the moment, so lots of places are more expensive than they used to be... Canada is no longer a cheap date since their currency hit parity with the greenback. There are lots of places you could go in the US though... Tarpon off the keys or the coast of Texas... The White River in AR in search of that 30 lbs. brown... Steelheading along the great lakes or up in Oregon/Washington... Maine is supposed to have some interesting fishing... could go for stripers off the coast of Mass...

So many places, so little time...

Taimen... that's on the list... not cheap though... sounds like it's about $5K and that's not including the old, poorly serviced ex-soviet air transportation... still... they are supposed to be surface oriented... jeez...

Argentina could be great! And reasonably warm, if you stay far enough north. But south is better for other reasons
