Yes, people will need to register manually the first time. I was thinking of migrating over all of the user information automatically but then thought that it might be better to start with a clean slate. People might want to change their names and profile information anyway.

Exactly! There are a lot of old unused profiles on the old board. A clean slate would keep all the extraneous stuff off. The serious posters will migrate on their own.
