Truckee Report 17 Years, 4 Months ago
I got skunked on the Truckee today. Been awhile since that has happened. I was begining to think I might have some idea about what I was doing up there? It was really cold in morning biut warmed as the day went on. My brother in law caught one small rainbow but that was it. While we were fising above Glenshire, I had a guide come down and politely ask if we were headed up stream or down and how far might we go. I told him we hoped to fish up the next two or three runs but he was welcome to take his clients up there. He said no and took his clients above where I told him we might stop. Classy. I don't know which guide it was but I liked his style.

Thanks for the report Jarrett. For perspective, I had similar luck in the afternoon but further down the I-80 corridor. The wind was ripping through the stretch I was on and it never really warmed up. I went the streamer route instead of nymphing. Had 1 solid take on an bugger (olive, gold beadhead, black tail), but I failed to hook it up. My favorite streamer this season has been a gold/grizzly rabbit varient streamer with a thin gold tinsel down each side, but my box didn't provide like it should have.... dumb fly box not retrieving the broken off flies. Afterward, just as the shadows started to stretch I was able to get a couple small rainbows on a #16 grey quigleys type emerger after seeing some boils. I'd been doing well lower in NV with a small simple palmered dry (scruffy firey brown dub with furnace hackle) that sort of works for an ant or small mahogany, but it didn't come through for me today.

Re:Truckee Report 17 Years, 4 Months ago
...well Jarret I like you're style also.

That was a nice gesture on your part to offer the water above where you were heading. As I metioned to you we walked way upstream (above the "Power-Line Pool" and above the downstream-working single fly-angler. We worked the pocket-water below the Glenshire Bluffs. Similar results; a 10" RB on a #20 Brassie, trailing a #8 October Caddis Pupa, under an indicator. Had three more "on & offs" using a dry/dropper rig.

I'll be honest, I had not anticipated seeing as many anglers today on both the Truckee and Little Truckee. You'd think that there'd be fewer and fewer people on these waters...being as difficult they are to fish successfully. I guess people are piqued by the challenge..........

Thanks again for the offer.

I love talking fly-fishing. So, if you want some info on fly angling my "home waters" in the Truckee area, do not hesitate to contact me off the board; whether by phone (530-587-7333) or e-mail (cyberfly@cyberfly.com). Please be patient relative to a quick reply; most especially during May-October.

My latest crusade is limiting undo fly fishing guide impact on the Little Truckee River. This small venue is being abused my commericial guiding interests. Consequently the fishery is being abused, IMO, most especially by guides to the detriment of the fishery. Moderation is the key in usage.

During the last two seasons I've diplomatically mentioned to many guides that they should coordinate with others guides so that they minimize impact...it has been to no avail. Some entities are more guilty than others; weather independent or "stabled" (outfitter or fly shop). So I've just started taking this public. Any civil suggestions/comments on limiting guide impact would be appreciated.

Simply, I'm a fly fishing junkie. In 1984, in order to justify my addiction, I started Thy Rod & Staff in Truckee; the longest existing, fly fishing guide service in the Tahoe area and possibly one of the longest in California. I'm an independent; so the "buck stops with me". I tailor trips to the specific desires and skill levels of the client; no "my way or the highway" guiding.

Simply, experience counts folks! 2009 will be my 26th year exclusively as a professional fly fishing guide in Truckee. As long as I enjoying the interaction with other passionate fly anglers and/or those new to the sport; my service will continue into the future. I also "host" fly fishing club outings.

Encouraged by clients & family I started the Reel School of Fly Fishing in 1996. There are scheduled one & two-day clinics through-out the "general" season; entailing a maximum 3-to-1 attendee-to-instructor ratio. Now, since the season if open year-round; I have a scheduled snow-shoe/fly fishing group-outing during March.

Again in 2010 I will be "hosting" two groups at a private lodge in Chilean Patagonia; located 2+hours from Coyhaique, Chile. The lodge accommodates six (6) fly anglers only. It is located in an isolated river valley (40 minute jet-boat ride down river...no roads). From my past experience in this area, I'm guessing it is like Montana was 50-60 years ago....far-far-away from the "real world". Inquire for specifics, I will be going there every year. I've arranged with the lodge for some incredible pricing for two "hosted" weeks in 2010. Also I can arrange other stays and special pricing...contact me.

You are a good man Frank.

I stopped fishing this summer when the water got real hot. 2 weekends ago when it got cold I didn't go because it was too cold. Guess its sorta like Goldilocks - needs to be just right!

I would think unless folks were spectacularly good casters would have given up on the LT a long time ago, espcially at 25-35cfs all summer long.

Again - CLASS ACT Frank!

Hi Jarrett, too bad all guides dont act this way. It is really in their best interest to act this way when wading/drift boating.

It was probably a guide from the Reno Fly Shop, Dave and his staff are the classiest in the business. If you fish the Truckee make sure to stop in their or their shop in truckee (if it is open) and give them some business, class acts like that deserve it.

Re:Truckee Report 17 Years, 4 Months ago
RB----Actually the LT was at 50-52 cfs for...I'm guessing...6-8weeks. From there it was ramped-down to its present 30-32cfs about 2+- weeks. The BT was ramped UP to 300+cfs out of Tahoe City about ten days ago.

We're into fall fishing now and the fish are eating. Weather has been wonderful last two days but I believe we'll be getting some inclement weather Thursday and Friday...fabulous BWO weather. Saw my first October Caddis today, at an undisclosed venue...........

Man, this work crap just gets in the way. My favorite season is fall in Tahoe. Wife and I are trying to figure out how to spend more time up there.

I was going to go up Fri-Sun, but the predictions of snow may make me take day trips to valley locales.

I did fish a very cool little stretch this summer I am sure you have been to, it flows into the T not far from our place in TD. Just a great escape. I bet the fishing is great there right now.

I'm heading up your way, Frank--I'm going to be in Sierra City and was thinking of heading north, looked at the atlas and thought, man, why not go down to Truckee? I'm heading over on the 15th, and have to confess to total ignorance about fishing in the area, having last been in the area more than a decade ago. Any tips on best places to hit? Truckee, Little Truckee, other area streams? Any info will be greatly appreciated and can be sent off the board by anyone if preferred.

Thanks.
