Time of day to fish/where to go? 17 Years, 4 Months ago
Hi everyone,

New site looks great. Haven't been on in quite a while and haven't fished much in the last couple of years. Unfortunately my knee has made it a real problem but it's gotten somewhat better and I just can't stay away any longer. So I am looking for some advice.

Does anyone know if its gotten cold enough to where the fishing has flipped to being better during the mid day while the sun is on the water or are we still doing better in the mornings and evenings?

Obviously this depends on elevation, river, etc. I am thinking of trying to get up to the N. Fork of the Feather or maybe the Yuba (below hwy 20 bridge) or maybe the Truckee. Anyone have any suggestions?

I live in Lincoln now, so these are all places I can get to in an hour to an hour and a half.

Any advice (on flies also) would be greatly appreciated.

Even in my hay day I never got out much this time of year, so I am a little out my element and just found out tonight I could get away tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Look forward to being back in the fly fishing world, I've sorely missed it.

This cooler weather should spur the October Caddis to get going on the upper Sac!

The Upper Sac is definitely fishing very well in the afternoon, in fact insects arent moving around till at least mid morning. I have been having many double digit days of fish 12 -16 inches and had one fish that was around 25 inches that I let go. Lots of broadstock (not sure if spelled right) swimming around. Have seen a occasional october caddis, but it is still a couple weeks off. Anyways upper sac fish dont really key in on october caddis till they start dieing off in november, the McCloud is a bit better.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

I decided to go hit a local spot during Sat. between 3-7PM. The river I fished isn't talked about much and have had people indicate that it should probably stay that way, so I won't mention by name.

But it is about 1000' elevation in the sierra foothills. The fishing was slow, I'm sure the rain the night before didn't help. I was able to catch 3 fish the biggest being a 15" (the other 2 were small guys 8" & 10". They were mostly keying on a copper john (red or orange) under a small stone fly. Most of my action came early after I hit the water and then died off as it got cooler.

So to answer my own question I think the fishing especially on cooler days is starting to move to the day time and away from the evenings.

Even though this info. isn't specific I thought it might help others. Sorry I don't have pics my wife took the camera to a b-day party. I'll post pics in a couple of weeks when I go again.

Hi Phil, for dry fly action I would hit the mccloud, and the big browns coming out of the lake are a added plus. Generally the best time to catch upper sac fish on dry flies is around the end of the old season when the fish key in on the dieing caddis.

I would say that is the consensus of people that regularly fish the area. I just posted almost the same thing. People are going to think I am just quoting you
