Pram loading/unloading 12 Years, 1 Month ago

I visited Jim Wheeler last week to pick up my lovely new 8' pram. So far I've been able to enlist friends and passersby to help load and unload it from the top of my camper shell, but that can't continue. If any of you out there load and unload your pram or small boat singlehandedly, I'd be pleased to hear how you do it. I'm looking into something called the "Car-a-boat", which I've seen used before, but, really, I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks for your consideration.

Andre has a handy little device that fit the receiver
hitch , slick setup...set the boat on the rack,tie it down
then walk it up till it locked in place.
How much does your pram weigh ?

I load my 8' aluminum pram on a set of Thule racks that are installed on the bed cover of my pick up truck so it it's not too high...when I had a shell on an earlier pick up, I loaded the pram in the truck bed (hanging out on the tailgate.
I thought I had some photos of the pram on the Thule rack...it I can find them, I'll post them.

Hi Paul,
That was my first thought, to lift the pram onto the tailgate, then shove it up on the load bars on top of the camper shell, but even at 75 lbs. that's kind of awkward. So I went ahead and ordered the boat loader, which is a pole bolted into the hole for the trailer hitch. It's got a rotating, swiveling clamp on the top. I won't get much of an angle on it because the pram's 8 feet long and the load bars are just 6 feet off the ground. Not that I mind, but the alternative seems to be to always bring along a buddy when I use the pram.

Great to hear you have a solution Bruce and I can stop looking for those photos. I'm getting old...I mixed you up with a "Craig" I know with the same last name...an ex-Orvoid should know better (and remember more).

Funny you should quote Groucho Marx. I'm naming my pram after him. One side will be the SS Capt. Jeffrey Spaulding, the other, SS Rufus T. Firefly, or maybe Otis B. Driftwood. How's that for confusing the opposition?
