Trinity River Fly Types? 17 Years, 3 Months ago
I will have one day on the Trinity at the end of this month. What size and flies do I need to be tying ? Seeing that I don't fish for steelhead what length and taper do I need to tie for my leader?

1cam,

Are you a swinger or a nympher?

I fish 99% of the time with nymphs. I assume a "swinger" means a streamer user. I haven't had much luck fishing streamers; not enough experience using that method.

That helps. I mostly nymph as well. Some patterns which I have found effective include: Pheasant Tail nymphs, small Golden Stones, egg patterns. Black A/P's, Copper and Red Copper Johns (and even Chartruese), Prince nymphs and other common trout patterns. I often try to be a little contrarian on the stream. I pick patterns that aren't being fished by everyone else, so the fish see something new and different. I see flies being fished down to size 16's, but I mostly opt for 10-12's with short shank hooks that give me a smaller fly, but a bigger gape to hook the fish.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

This could be construed as a much different question anywhere other than this board.

Just returned from a good three day trip on the Trinity, 7 landed/5 on the swing.
I mostly swing using patterns suggested by Herb Burton. Going back up next week!

BH Burlap 6-8
BH Brown Hackled Peacock Nymph 6-8-10
Silver Hilton or Trinity Hilton (brown hackle wing and tail with gold ribbing)
October Caddis Pupae - Tangerine Dream ect 6-8-10
Muddler Minnow 4-6 200R

All tied on 200R, 9671 or 9672

These flies are all consistent producers 10-11 foot leader tapered to 0x or 1x or 10# Maxima.
Throw them down and across and hold on.

Nymphs:
#10 GB Hare's Ear
Any Stonefly, gold or black
Glo bug if the salmon are in
#12-#14 Copper Johns- Blue is the hot color believe it or not, but red, green and copper will work
The burlap and peacock nymph can be drifted under and indicator also

Mike
