It looks like I'm going to lose a very close friend... 17 Years, 3 Months ago
Old Sammie, FeatherRiverSam, my 12 year old Golden Retriever, has been diagnosed with a insulnomai cancer and been given about two months to live. Needless to say I'm beside myself.

We've been on this board quite a while now and I've made some good friends as a result. Chances are very good if you've met me, you've met Sammie and it was probably out at Lake Davis.

I'm proud to say she recently won the grand prize for a Boston Whaler 50th Anniversary Calendar Contest.

I'd sell my Whaler in a minute for a little more time with my little partner.

Some other of my favorite shots I've posted over the years:

Sammie & I Lake Davis 2004 [Pic taken by Benfishin]

Sammie sitting in the snow at Lake Davis

Sammie Duck Hunting Lake Davis

Sammie Lake Almanor - Hex hatch

Sammie Lake Davis 11pound 35 inch pike

Sammie Anticipation Lake Davis

Any positive thoughts directed toward Sammie would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure going to miss that unconditional love...

Pete & Sammie

PS Dawn if you could forward all that good KARMA you've got stored away - I think I've found a good place to put it.

Sonny, the black lab, ran ahead to make sure there were no gophers or jackrabbits in the way. If you don't give a dog a specific job, he'll improvise one for himself and it will invariably be fun. There's a lesson there.

Sorry to hear that... we're having some difficulty with our boxer at the moment that could see her have surgery or lose an eye and that's pretty tough... hate to think about the day she leaves us.

Our thoughts are with you.

Thoughts & prayers are with you 17 Years, 3 Months ago
Pete,

Our thoughts & prayers are with you and Sammie. I'm amazed at the outstanding qualities dogs have and all that they teach US! Sammie is a fine dog. No doubt the days ahead will be difficult for you both. Give Sammie a scratch behind the ear from all of us!

I really feel for you. Been there myself. You're really priviledged to have such a good friend. I'm sending all my positive thoughts in your direction.

God Bless,

I am so sorry, Pete! 17 Years, 3 Months ago
My heart just aches for you and Sammie. We do not get enough earthly time with our dogs. I will send all the good thoughts and prayers to you and Sammie that I can. If there was a way to send Karma, I would send all I could. Keep us posted, and give Sammie a big hug for me. She is the best golden retriever I have ever met.

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

Dogs are a very special part of our lives. No matter how bad your day, or how much is going on, they remain steadfast and ever ready to please. They have no greater goal than to be with you and make sure you are happy. Especially retrievers. We are fortunate to have one that just loves people, and adores children. There is something magical in that.

The time goes so fast. Our dog is approching 7 1/2. Seems like he was just a pup. And we do many days take them for granted - we skip the walk, we don't throw the frisbee, or we are in a rush and don't bend down to give them a pat on the head and a scratch behind the ears. Yet he is always waiting at the door when we get home with his stuffed animal.

At least you know what is coming, and you can slow down and do all those things with Sammie. Enjoy the moments.

PS - I have noticed that my dog will never look me straight in the eye. Perhaps all dogs are this way. But when you get to the short strokes I will bet Sammie will very much appreciate you being there and looking him in the eyes.

Pete,
I often download pictures off the board that I keep in a folder for my own enjoyment. I downloaded this as one of my favorite dog pics as soon a I saw it.

Ah geez Pete, I'm so sorry to hear that. There isn't much we can offer to soften the sad news, but I've been told that every negative has a positive. In this case, you'll have time to prepare both of you for the inevitable and make what time he has left a true blessing for him...and I know you already have. You have my sincere sympathy my friend.
