Dogs are a very special part of our lives. No matter how bad your day, or how much is going on, they remain steadfast and ever ready to please. They have no greater goal than to be with you and make sure you are happy. Especially retrievers. We are fortunate to have one that just loves people, and adores children. There is something magical in that.
The time goes so fast. Our dog is approching 7 1/2. Seems like he was just a pup. And we do many days take them for granted - we skip the walk, we don't throw the frisbee, or we are in a rush and don't bend down to give them a pat on the head and a scratch behind the ears. Yet he is always waiting at the door when we get home with his stuffed animal.
At least you know what is coming, and you can slow down and do all those things with Sammie. Enjoy the moments.
PS - I have noticed that my dog will never look me straight in the eye. Perhaps all dogs are this way. But when you get to the short strokes I will bet Sammie will very much appreciate you being there and looking him in the eyes.
