Great stuff Paul. My father was like that...he wanted to take any unpaved road he could even if it didn't quite look like it was going in the right direction. He was smart though...he'd only do it when one of his three sons was with him. That is a good way to find those secret spots if you could only remember how to get back to them. Pete

Sonny, the black lab, ran ahead to make sure there were no gophers or jackrabbits in the way. If you don't give a dog a specific job, he'll improvise one for himself and it will invariably be fun. There's a lesson there.
