I've been on several of those "shortcuts" that you mention, but I'm usually not with the wife. If I were, I don't think I'd still be alive. On your list, the Humbug Road from Yellow Creek was particularly memorable.
I'd like to add Louie Road from Interstate 5 to Hwy 97 to the list. It might be better now, but I recall years ago it was little more than a creek bed.
I've also accessed the Selway River in Idaho on Macruder Pass Road, starting in Elk City (scary locals), all the way to the Selway. It was over five hours of rocky, narrow 4WD "road." . Once there, I saw that the road from the Montana side was paved, and all kinds of people were there. So much for solitude. DOH!
