went down to 2 mile bar yesterday morning, late. Nobody there, no risers, overcast, windy, very clear water @ about 200 - 250cfs I would guess, no bug activity to speak of other than dozens of hungry dragonflies. Caught joe avrage trout nymphing on the third drift using a GRHE under a pink dirty worm. Stuck with that setup and hit the spots. Not much action other than in the first riffle as you walk in. Saw several smaller fish scooting about but no bigger ones and no salmon yet. Prolly fished 6x for about three hours. Pulled one out from under a sweeper by sticking my rod tip down under the bush with about two feet of line out...wiggled it around and whammo. Bow River bugger strikes again!
Since I was already 1/3 of the way to Modesto, I went on down to visit Bob N. @ Sierra Anglers Fly Shop. Big selection of fly fishing items. (hi Bob! thanks for the cardboard tube) Cheapest gas = USA in Oakdale on west F St. & S. Gilbert St.(main drag) $2.79 unl.....$2.99 diesel...best mexican food @ La Perla Tapatia in Riverbank.

I have not tried La Perla. Is that the one near the Del Rio, or the one closer to Claus Rd.?
I really like El Agave Taqueria in Oakdale (right behind the Beacon station). Their Carne Asada and Carnitas are excellent, and I especially like their salsa fresca, but all of the salsas are great.

Guess I can't say it's the best not having tried the others, eh??
La Perla is the one on the east end of town near Claus rd.
It's more of a quick stop place than a sit down deal.
drizzeling here now (Melones Res)...glad I got the boat covers on this am.

It's interesting that you mention catching mostly smaller fish at 2MB. I have noticed that most of the fish I catch at Goodwin now are a lot smaller on average than they were ~2 years ago (the last time the flows were reasonable). I wonder if it is attributable to all the high flows, or if the poachers are just cleaning up?

POACHING!!! I remember going there and catching at least a couple 18 to almost 20 inchers....now it's all tiddlers. Best is about 11 or 12" now. (newsflash>>Most folks overestimate the size of fish!)
It'll get better when the salmon come but the trout that follow the salmon are pretty hard to catch. Those fish and the bigger residents just can't resist a fat nitecrawler. They'll move a long ways for a meal like that. I've seen trout hauled out by the stringerfull before. I think they've all been cleaned out.
From conversations I've had in the past with the DFG people, the warden won't patrol the river much at all now that it's deer season. What can ya do? Go to the highway and call cal tip anyway....there's a cell signal out near the hiway.
....on my way to platinum!!

Yep, that, with the added delight of tweakers breaking into cars, really puts the hurt to that fishery. But it's my home water (I live in Ripon), so I fish on...
It's a bloody crime that with the massive increase in population in this state, combined with the ever rising cost of the license, the number of Game Wardens is at an all-time low, and only gettine worse.

I'm surprised at the size of the fish in some of the small lakes and reservoirs over here. A couple places I didn't expect to see more than 10" have pulled in 14-18" and more with my friends. Maybe the east side just grows 'em bigger!! On our Manly Man trip to Bridgeport (July) I got one about 13" but with a girth to qualify for pro football!
Oh Yeah, great Mexican food in Gardnerville on the curve on 395 heading South on the left. Never can remember the name of the place. Little mom & pop joint.
