October Caddis 17 Years, 3 Months ago
My annual October trip to the Upper Sac is 3 weeks away and my primary fly for the past few years is a size 8 & 6 Tungsen Bead Orange Fox Pooba (I'm tying more for the occasion).

Any suggestions/recommendations for other (successful) subsurface pattern for the October Caddis.

Hey Paul,
You may want to check this pattern out that is on Ralph's site.

try tying some fox squirrels but use some creamy orange dubbing...do you have much success with subsurface OC patterns?... they have an odd emergence cycle, they do a fair amount of "walking" along the bottom.

I fish the Tungsten Bead Orange Fox Pooba, dead drift on the bottom...feeling every rock and do well on the Upper Sac...for a second "emerging" caddis, I may use a large light orange Sparkle Caddis pupa or something like Ralph's Tangerine Dream (but different, all loosely spun Orange antron with a dark antron head instead of a hackle)...every once in a while at dark, I'll catch a fish on an adult...take your pick, large orange Elk Hair, Bird's Stonefly, or an orange stimulator.

This one's easy to tie, and saw its first uses on the Sac:

It's actually better tied on a 2302 with a black or copper bead!

I love the fox squirrel for Octobers. In fact, when I tie on searching patterns for the Upper Sac one of them is always a fox squirrel as the caddis are always in the river.

My preferred fly at the MTFF outing last year was an orange-body Czech nymph with a dark (black or brown) head, which the trout found agreeable. The weighted body got it down to the bottom fast. I also like the large, fat Oct caddis patterns that are sold at the Ted Fay Fly Shop.

I can bring examples of each to the next MTFF meeting if you like.

Going to the same spots, repeatedly, at the same time each year is giving me the opportunity to fine tune my Giant Pumpkins

This year I'll be unleashing something special... can't claim it's totally original, but assembling my favorite components of other tried and true materials and techniques. The highlights being
- neat way of preparing turkey quill for the wing pads, and
- translucent pupal sheath effect resulting from some agressive picking and brushing of fine antron... basically Sparkle Pupa style... the last part will be applying DryShake before fishing.

Was going to show these on Tuesday nights meeting, but unfortunately for you all... I'll be in Hawaii So you'll have to wait 'till October to see it!

Here's my pattern. It is a soft hackle October. Works very well.
