I sure hope they're able to get all of the pike this time around. They, the Forest Service & the Dept of Fish & Game, sure seem to have done everything possible to implement this treatment. I heard from a friend the other day they had found pike as far as 10 miles up one of the feeder creeks at the lake.
I hate to admit it but I can't help but feel this isn't going to be the final word on the pike in Davis. It just seems there are to many variables from the size of the lake, to existing springs within the lake, side channels & pools within the feeder creeks, the reproduction rate of pike and finally the durability of the damn pike themselves.
And if it doesn't work it would appear that draining the lake would be the only alternative left. Hopefully it won't come to that. Were that to happen I've heard it would be 4 to 7 years to reestablish the lake depending on weather water content in the years to follow.
The short term outlook for the lake should be great. Following the treatment in 97' with the number of fish planted the fishing was beyond belief - you just needed to be able to hit the water with what ever you were fishing. Of course the size of the fish, the challenge and the fighting ability weren't up to traditional Davis standards but it was encouraging to see how quickly the lake rebounded.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully we can get our good old Lake Davis back - it used to be one hell of a fishery. Thanks for the report troutnut.
