Lower Sac river 17 Years, 3 Months ago
I am new to this board and the reason I joined it is to get some info on flies that I need to be tying. I will be on the lower sac at the end of Oct. and the first week in Nov. My fishing will be mainly for trout but I am bringing my 8 wt. in case I can hook some salmon. The fishing will be mostly wading so what size and types of flies should I be tying. I will be staying in Red Bluff. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

egg patterns will work in late October and November. I've used a large stone fly pattern as a point fly with an egg pattern drifting as a dropper. If you only fish with one fly, drift the egg pattern with enough weight to get close to the bottom, if not bouncing on the bottom.

Other patterns that have worked well for me on the LSAC include the Tan or Green Fox Poopahs, flashback PTs, micro mays, and soft hackles. if the day is cold and damp, look for BWOs to be coming off. If its sunny, you can almost always find caddis.

The best wadeable places to fish are up in Redding, which is about a half hour north of Red Bluff. The Redding Flyshop has maps of places to fish. With reasonable water levels in the Fall, there should be a lot of wadeable area to fish.

Doing a float with my wife next Monday. Fly selection will be a little different depending exactly where on the river you'll be. I'm guessing that we'll doing the standard Posse to RV Park float, in which case I'll be loading up with various egg patterns; (though I'm not sure how effective they'll be this early in the season - a variety of Pettis Unreal Eggs; bright Micro Spawns, and beads of various colors); FBPT's; Micro Mays; Drifting Flashbacks; Gordon Princes; and Fox Poopahs.

From Anderson or below, I'd add some stonefly patterns, most notably Mercer's Micro Stones. We'll also be bringing BB, AB, AAA & SSG size shot to get the flies down. The AAA and SSG weights are used more as you get lower down the river.

The Streamtime map will indicate some walk-in access points closer to Red Bluff than Redding - we've had success at some of those spots like Bend, Paynes Creek, etc. A good online source is www.sacramentoriver.org

All of the flies that the others mentioned are good choices. I have also used Golden Stones and lightening bugs with success. You also might want to check with The Fly Shop in Redding, they have guides on the water every day and they can tell you what has been working. I live in Red Bluff so when you get closer to your trip you may want to check back here to get an up date on the river conditions.
