I've noticed the same thing. It seems some (not all) of the threads that I open will automatically "subscribe" me to the thread so if it turns out to be a substantially long thread with many responses, I could end up receiving LOTS of email notifications in a very short time. The only way I found is to "unsubscribe" to the thread.
