This article reviews Bob Quigley's recently released DVD in which he demonstrates tying and fishing several of his signature flies on California's Fall River.
B ob Quigley is best known as an innovative fly tier and for his unique spring creek fly patterns. His classroom is the Fall River in Northern California, where he has used his fly tying expertise to design patterns that trick even the most difficult of trout. In Bob’s latest video, he demonstrates fishing his unique fly patterns during a blizzard hatch of Pale Morning Dun (PMD) mayflies on the Fall River. And he demonstrates tying three of his patterns: the Stacker Stuffer Spider Spinner Male PMD, Bi-Wing Female PMD Spinner and the Extendo PMD Cripple CDC Wing.
Bob Quigley on the Fall River
This video is about much more than fly tying. It includes wonderful scenes of fishing and catching trout in on the scenic Fall River. Bob has the experience and knowledge of many years fishing the Fall River and shares this knowledge liberally in the video with many tips and techniques for approaching trout feeding on the stream, mending techniques, casting to rising trout and fighting fish on very light tippet. The film features excellent footage of large trout rising to clusters of mayflies drifting in the current and Bob demonstrates how to catch them with downstream drift techniques, and cross-stream tactics. The camera captures Bob in his element, and his passion for fly fishing comes across as clearly as if you were sitting in the boat next to him trying to match his fly fishing prowess cast for cast.
From a fly tier’s perspective, I especially appreciate Bob’s technique and his explanations of why he has designed and constructed patterns utilizing specific materials and techniques. The Stacker Stuffer Spider Spinner Male PMD demonstrates a different and very effective spinner pattern. The spent wings are constructed with an over-sized grizzly hackle that gives an excellent silhouette on the water. The Bi-wing PMD Spinner utilizes CDC to create a dual wing fly that imitates a cluster of mayflies drifting in the river. Lastly, the Extendo PMD Cripple CDC Wing is a unique adaptation that significantly updates Bob’s original Quigley Cripple pattern. In the video Bob demonstrates the tying technique for each of these patterns and discusses why he might fish each pattern for particular situations.
