he October Fly of the Month is tied by Thomas Duncan, the former PastorD, a longtime contributor to the NCFFB and one heck of a good fly tyer!. This is a fly that Thomas gave me some years ago at a Fall Bash. I kept it in my fly collection and recently pulled it out and invited Thomas to profile this fly on the Board. This is my favorite October Caddis and a fitting first October Fly of the Month on the new NCFFB.

Thomas Duncan's CDC October Caddis Emerger

As an attempt to "split the difference", this fly does the work of an emerging October Caddis, but has a few details which might ordinarily be seen on an imitation of an adult. Instead of riding high, though, this fly will settle down in the film and its shiny body fibres, soft hackle, and CDC wing will give a convincing impression of a caddis in the process of developing into an adult. The deer or elk hair should be sparse, as its purpose in giving a slight colouration to the developing wings is only secondary; it's first job is to keep the CDC in place, which in turn keeps the fly atop the water.

You might be wondering why the wing is so lightly coloured, given that an October Caddis' wing is considerably darker. By using the cream CDC, we are essentially giving a shiny "underwing" effect, not so much replicating the entire wing's identical

if you follow this pattern - no matter how unnatural it might seem - you might find yourself pleasantly surprised

colour, but instead giving the impression of distinct shininess under the darker deer hair. If using cream bothers you, try dark dun, but if you follow this pattern - no matter how unnatural it might seem - you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.

For a slightly different look, a curved-shank hook like the TMC 200R gives this fly a good body profile, but with the hair butts sticking forward, it can make tying on your tippet somewhat awkward. (Make that downright frustrating in low light!) Hook styles aren't set in stone: use one you like.

The recipe:

Hook: XL dry fly hook, size 6-10 (TMC 5212 or 200R or equivalent)
Body: Ginger SLF, tied shaggily (SLF is "Synthetic Living Fibre" from Wapsi)
Rib: X-Fine copper or gold wire
Hackle: Soft, mottled brown hen
Wing: Golden brown deer or elk over cream CDC

Tying instructions:

1. Take tying thread to rear of hook and form a dubbing loop.
2. Place dubb in loop and wrap forward, leaving room for hackle and wing.
3. Tie in hackle, tip first, and make a wrap or two, folding back as you do so.
4. Tie in CDC fairly full, extending no longer than the bend of the hook.
5. Place a small bundle of deer or elk on top of the hook, and gently slip a wrap over it, flaring it very slightly around the CDC. Allow a few fibres to stick out to the side to act as "outriggers" since it will otherwise want to tip easily.
6. Whip finish just under the deer hair tips, trim them, and cement.

That's a great looking fly Phil...that October Caddis sure is fun to fish once they start hitting, and I mean hitting, the water.

Thanks for the great information on this fly. By chance, is there an archive where other flies/material recipes can be reviewed?

We are just getting going with the new Fly Tying Page. You can review the current page at the following URL:

You can also reach this page off the Home Page/ Main Menu (right hand side of the page), and link to Fly Tying.

Enjoy!

TD/Phil,

OK, so I had to make some material substitutions and I changed the head, but we all put our own twist on any pattern don't we? It looks a little fuller than yours but I think it'll ride in the surface once it gets a little wet and chewed up

But I really like this pattern! Thanks for the inspiration.

Where is PastorD? I still owe him a big thanks for advice on rebuilding a cracked/mangled butt section and reel seat on an Orvis rod many years ago. It still works great and no problems.

Now maybe I should just tie on that fly o the month!

Wow! Now that is one shaggy fly! What is the dubbing material?

Then THANKS again for the rod "re-building" advice!

Appreciated.

Had to substitute for everything except the copper wire
I was struggling on the body dubbing (no ginger SLF), so I hand blended a ton of stuff I had in the kit. It’s a mostly a blend of apricot egg yarn, cream antron, tan rabbit, and a little misc cream, firey brown, hot orange, and red. I’ll probably never be able to replicate it…but I got 8 flies out of that mix. Hen pheasant instead of mottled hen. Instead of cream cdc, used 1 natural and 1 white. Natural deer hair for the thin wing, and the head is just crinkled deer hair in a dubbing loop then trimmed up (twist and bend after you cut off then crush into a little ball in the palm of your hand).

I'm a little worried it might be too bouyant and not play the emerger role very well.

Looks like fun! The creativity on the dubb is awesome -- let us know how it works for you!

I rewatched Bugs of the Underworld tonight. Ralph says...
"The October Caddis is perhaps the most famous of the terrestrial emergers"

so... whatever this fly is doing in the film, emerging is not it... Have any thoughts?

Maybe this better fits the category of "cripple", although I greatly dislike that term. Plenty of bugs get stuck in between stages -- having a pattern that imitates them is just another good tool in the old box.

Thanks TD,
Maybe a spent or an adult. I can see doing something similar for other caddis.

I hit one of the rivers that has these last weekend and got to see them for the first time. Fish were a bit shy or educated or pressured but each of us managed a handful over the weekend. Takes on dries were generally quick after the fly had landed and toward evening. (used a stimi or chernobyl ant with a dropper as well)

Amazing bug in an amazing setting. Here's a little homage to the lifecycle of this fella (that fish came to your fly btw )
