Joey with a Nice Brown Trout
We camped at the Slide Inn in Cameron Mt. This was our first extended camping trip. We arrived late Thursday evening after a 13.5 hour drive to find the Scott Rep parked in the camp area showing the latest Scott had to offer. We casted a prototype for the new S4 and it was pretty sweet. Seemed a little fast for me but Joey casted it well. We met John Dobson the Scott rep and Kelly Galloup was there too casting rods. After shooting the bull we set up camp just before dark. This was our base camp and we were pretty lucky the weather was good. We only had one stormy night and our tent held up well.We hijacked the gazebo and made it our mess hall. The roof of the gazebo had some character but it served us well. We decided to head the Yellowstone right away since my park pass was only good for a couple days. We settled on Soda Butte Creek for some native Yellowstone cutthroat. The creek was pretty crowded but Joey did catch his first native cutthroat trout. The deer/buffalo flies were bad and maybe some mud wasps. I got a few bites and my hands started to swell. On our second day we decided to hit the Gallatin River with-in the park limits. We managed few fish but the water was running a little low. My hands continued to swell and when my wrists started to swell I thought I should seek some professional help. Went to the only clinic open in the area on a Saturday. Doc showed up in shorts and a T-shirt and said he would fix me up so we could continue our trip. The steroids worked well and after all that driving I decided we should fish the water in our back door. Joey decided that he needed to tie a caddis emerger and went into the fly shop. The guys were great and let him tie all the flies he wanted for free. He now can whip finish by hand like an expert. He liked hanging out with Kelly and his Guides (Tim & Andy) in the mornings over his coffee. Don’t tell Mom but he had some coffee in the mornings. On our first day fishing the Madison right behind the Slide Inn Joey fished a Caddis emerger he just tied in a skinny riffle. I would have passed up this water but he did not and this was his reward. Joey was the hit of the shop and spent much of his off water time hanging out with the boys. After spending time in the shop and rummaging through the $1 Fly bin he found a Monkey Butt Sculptin Streamer. We decided to fish it in a back channel right behind the shop where the big boys hung out at night. So at 10:30pm we hit the water and in minutes Joey is tangled in the dark. Dad takes over and makes about 15 casts with the sink tip up and down and all over. Hands the rod back to Joey and he hooks a monster in about 3 casts. We did not measure the fish bit I’m sure it went 20+. Fish-on across and below Hud’s riffle Nice Madison Rainbow Indian Creek rainbow in Grizzly Bear country. What a Smile A little SLO bashing in always in order I think we found Slo’s missing Suburban….Sorry Bro Joey cooling off with my future daughter in-law Madison who happens to be Kelly Galloup’s daughter. A few photo’s from our drive home. We were delayed when 80 was closed outside Winnemucca. We are home safe and sound and Joey did not want to leave which is normal. I have since had more reactions to the bites I got on my feet and broken out in hives and have been pretty miserable the last few days. I never was allergic to anything prior to this trip but those deer flies tore me up this time. We really enjoyed our trip and Kelly Galloup’s Slide Inn is an awesome place to make you base camp. Joey made their web site. Tight Lines, Jet P.S I found this cabin for rent that sleeps 5-6 and would be worth checking out if we could share it would someone. Let me know that you think? |
