Transplanted Angler 15 Years, 8 Months ago
I’m happy to find your board! I’m Tom Gribble from Ohio. I have a friend who is working for AmeriCorps. He will be in Northern California for 10 months. He is an avid angler, and is learning your neck of the woods! I have taken him Great Lakes steelhead fishing for the first time, and he liked it. Now he finds himself where he is truly steelhead fishing “not like here in the Great Lakes”. His name is Lou he is a great young man. He is a great learner, but he finds himself in unfamiliar lands. He has caught a few Steelhead In a few creeks/rivers I will not mention here due to me not knowing what creeks or rivers should and should not be talked about on the board. Like our pressure here in the GL (Great Lakes) has gotten out of control since the invention of the intranet. I was curious if someone would be kind enough to show him some general access. He does not have a boat so he is wade fishing only. I have to imagine that one would have to be careful when accessing these rivers, creeks due to thier topography and flows. I will give you his email address if interested to help Lou out. I know this is a lot to ask, but as fellow anglers I was hoping you could understand.

Thank you,

TG

Tell him to sign up on the board, let us know where he's going to be, what kind of angling in particular he's interested in, and I'm confident folks will step up with info and opportunities. What's he working on for Americorp?

They are a sub consultant for the fish and game for the State of California. His major is in fisheries / Biology I do believe that he does not have any internet capability as of yet up there where he is. I call him once aday to see how he is doing, and I just called him so hopefully he is able to get ome type of internet connection. He is staying in a town called Yreka, and hes going to do his best to get logged in here to introduce himself take care all!

He's in a good spot for trout, steelhead and salmon fishing. The Upper Sacramento is right nearby, and it's open for winter angling. The Klamath for steelhead, the Smith, southern Oregon, all really accessible. I bet (jeez I hope!) that some of his co-workers will be able to share some info with him, too. If he gets some time off to fish he'll have a good time.

Stay inside... never go fishing especially during winter... it sucks... don't go... There are definately no Steelhead in California rivers... You might as well go to Oregon.

The fakest of all steelheaders,
Dustin Revel

If he is in yreka he could fish the upper Klamath or hop over the pass and fish the rogue near Grants Pass. The coast is a very
long drive from where he is at.

I am the transplanted angler, and first off I appreciate that people are willing to help out a new guy right off the bat. I have been getting owned by the steelies out here. this past week I have been at training in the fortuna area, but I will be living near and usually working on the klamath and its tribs. I have yet to take a real attempt at the klamath, thats a lot of water to try and bank fish. anyway, so far the only thing that I have managed to hook were a few smallish adults all on eggs, I would really like some tips on swinging because as releaxing as it is to swing flies in really good looking water, it has yet to produce the jolt of anything but rocks and sticks. thanks for any information and tips you are willing to share.
Lou

Btrout,

You are in a pretty good place. The Thai restaurant on So Main street is pretty good, but they don't have a beer license - Quelle Fromage!

I stayed in Yreka last week with my son, while we fished the Klamath - reasonably good fishing, but pretty tough to wade. We floated. Most of our fish were on egg patterns, a couple on big dark stonefly nymphs.

Don't know a thing about swinging flies (or otherwise) I'm afraid, but you are between the Klamath and the Upper Sac, both open.

Best of luck!
