Will a photo embedded in a post show up in the preview?

I've been trying to post a picture with no success. I've been using the "browse" feature to select the pic from my hard drive. I've reduced the size to below the 800X800 pixel limitation and I'm using the "img" placeholder, but all I get when I preview my message is the dreaded red X. What am I missing?
