Question: How to transition from old board? 17 Years, 4 Months ago
What do you guys think about putting a link on the old board to the new site? I was originally thinking that we would just shut down the old board and make the switch cold turkey. What if we have a 2 week grace period to let people switch back and forth until they are comfortable and then shutdown the old board from postings?

I liked your idea about a count down on the old site to the new site. I also like the idea of a transition period for people to get comfortable with the new site.

Transition is good. 17 Years, 4 Months ago
And the countdown idea is great.

Are you going to migrate all of the old posts over to this site? If you do a transition, will you attempt to keep the sites synched in any way, or just do one final transition after the old board drifts off into the sunset?

Hey Paul - I just added you as a moderator...let me know if you don't want to do that - you've done a great job on the old message board for years.

I was thinking that we could leave all of the old posts in an archive format - they will stay with the current board software. We can put a link on the new site that will take us to the old board so people can go and lookup old posts if they want. The old board will be "read only" - so once we turn the switch people will only be able to read what was there but not post anymore.

I'm in agreement about transition. Let there be a 2 week overlap and then shut down the old board.

I take it that everybody would need to separately register their login with the new board? once the old board is turned off, you'll need a short instruction on registering for the new board.

Yes, people will need to register manually the first time. I was thinking of migrating over all of the user information automatically but then thought that it might be better to start with a clean slate. People might want to change their names and profile information anyway.

Instructions would be good! I'll add that to the main page of the old board so people are clear on what they need to do.

Thanks for the comments and ideas!

Exactly! There are a lot of old unused profiles on the old board. A clean slate would keep all the extraneous stuff off. The serious posters will migrate on their own.
