Friday I got to travel on the USS Koi and went shad fishing with Carpy, UC, and Larry the Lurker (nice guy who just needs to post some!). Anyway we rocketed down the Sac to a few spots. UC and Carpy picked up some shad at the first place we stopped. We tried several other places with limited success so we we headed back there.
UC was hot....had a 20 fish day. The shad seemed to really like his flies (he shared them with us and they seemed to work). Carpy was consistant with somewhere around 10. I managed five or so and Larry got a few. I also picked up that large (20 inches) Sac Golden Shinner (SUCKERFISH) and a small Sac pike that hit as I was bringing in my line to cast again.
All in all it was a great day. Charlie gave me some casting lessons but soon realized he needed more time. The company was great and the weather hot. I might have to learn to fly a plane so I can get up here more often. Oh yes as for UC's comments (I think I'm snagged), I hooked up with a monster. I tried pulling and the line didn't move. The flyline was shimmering as it does when you snag in a current. I thought I was snagged since I couldn't move it when suddenly it moved itself. It broke me off so I'll never know that it was an 8 lb shad!!
Sat I met up with Dean F at the hwy 20 bridge. It was late (after 8) but there were only three other cars. We headed upstream. I hooked up with a fish just off the third ledge up. Just up from there where some downed trees and gravel divide the river, I LDRed one and landed a nice 14 in rainbow on the far side of the trees (the fish was right up under the tree). I headed way up with little success although you could see the fish in the water (which probably means they can see you). On the way back I fished the area just above the tree divide and hooked up with something big. We danced for a bit before it broke me off. Then I hooked up a nice bow in that third ledge area and it LDRed me with a jump, a twist of its head and a short laugh.
So that's it, four species and a very nice weekend fishing.
