Trinity Alps/FlyNGo - try from another area 15 Years, 6 Months ago
I'll try replying again on a new thread. Hopefully it won't go to white page.

I've been over a lot of ground in the Trinity Alps Wilderness. I've one of the few lakes on my wish list I have not be to is Grizzly Lake however. I used to hike up the North Fork of the Trinity River from Hobo Gulch towards Grizzly Lake to fish for summer run steelhead (catch and release)before that fishery closed to fishing. The fishing was so good we never made it all the way to Grizzly Lake.

Here are two of my favorite Trinity Alps hikes.

Bigflat campground to Caribou Lake. Be sure to hike up the pass (faint trail) above Caribou Lake to look down the Sawtooth Ridge drainage into Saphire and Emerald Lakes. It's unbelievable.

Swift Creek trailhead to Granite Lake and beyond to the four lakes loop around Siligo Peak. You pass Summit, Diamond, Luella and Deer Lakes. Each three of the lakes have stunning views.

Expect to find fish just about everywhere in the Alps. You can get away from crowds by camping along a stream as opposed to a lake. After Labor day you can have it pretty much to yourself.

There are a few hogs to be caught in the Alps here and there, but those who know where they are are rightfully tight lipped as it's a very delicate fishery for the larger fish. You also have to have pretty good skills and knowledge to seek them out and hook them. I've never caught a hog there, but have friends who have.

Tons of pan sized fish and a few trout over 12 inches here and there.

Lots of great scenery with reasonable elevations for those like me who need to acclimate a few days before hiking in the eastern sierras.

One of the ways I acclimate for the Alps is to fish a few days at Manzanita Lake at Lassen National Park (6,200 feet) car camping, then head on over to the Alps and start my hike.

I hope this gives you some ideas. If you try Grizzly Lake you will no doubt find it enjoyable. Just get an early start on the trail if the forecast is for hot temperatures. This is critical from your anticipated entry point.

Good luck, have fun.

Jim
