The Northern California Fly Fishing Board

OK....I am probably more than a bit slow on the uptake. I was tying some flies today and remembered some of the excellent tying resources on FlyFishNorCal.org. So I fired up the computer and tried to check it out. Its gone.

Any idea what happened? Are they at a different address? There was lots of nice content there (although I have to admit I haven't been on that site in many moons).

I think Ben ended it.

Are you still in Ukiah or did you make the move north?

Staying in Ukiah unless home prices shoot back up....got the home really comfortable now. I agree with you on the new format...it does suck.

There's a flyfishnorcal group on Facebook that Ben started, but he's not even a member of it anymore. As to this site, doesn't seem all that bad. Quiet and uneventful, but not all that hard to use.

I have no problem with the format. It is all the folks (the good, the bad, and yes even the ugly) that I miss. This was a fun, vibrant, informative, caring, and sometimes slightly dis-functional extended family. Much like my real life family. Its still a very good site, it just lost some of its former energy and "color".

I first signed on to the Board right in the midst of the troll about the UC Davis Vet student (beautiful female) looking for someone to teach her fly fishing. Now that didn't help me one bit in terms of useful fly fishing information. But it was a thing of beauty, a true work of troll art. I knew right then that I had found a community of anglers that I would enjoy belonging to.

Since they call this section of the board "the campfire," at one time we had us quite a crowd gathered around the campfire, lots of BSing, plenty of animated talk, a big roaring fire , and not to mention a few "flames." Well, like any campfire, people wander off to other fires, go to bed...whatever...and now we're a smaller number around the fire, the conversations are more subdued, some lapses in conversation now and then, and the fire has died down a bit, its not as hot as it once was. Still, we got us a nice bed of hot coals, and as much fun as a big lively, raucous fire can be, there certainly is something to be said about a smaller, more intimate one too. They're ALL good.

But there sure doesn't seem to be much interest in getting together in person as there used to be.......too bad, it was always fun.

When it comes to fly fishing, it is always a form of escape for me and one thing I try and escape is crowds. As a high school teacher, I'm around crowds CONSTANTLY when the school year is in, so in the summer, I compensate by getting away from them as much as possible. I never could understand the appeal of a fish-out done by some fly fishing clubs where hordes of folks descend on The Stan, The Yuba, etc. That is NOT to say that folks here aren't worth meeting, I'm certain they are, I've just never done it, at least as far as a bash goes. I have met a bunch of NCFFBers at a couple of Parks Bar clean ups in the fall on the Yuba (what I called the Trash Bash), where I met people like Fat Monk, Sparse Hackle, GM, Ralph Cutter, DBaggins, Jet, etc. to give you an idea how long ago THAT was. But that's not fly fishing, just good stewardship of a resource, so I hope a crowd WOULD show up for that. Also, we're JUST getting out of school when the bashes typically happen, so the timing isn't all that great.

I'm just enjoying the board for what it is NOW and not pining for "the good old days."

I agree with you both. I do much of my fishing alone. I enjoy the solitude. I have only been to a couple bashes. Wasn't about fishing at all. And they were great fun. Met some wonderful people. I would like to do more.

You should start making earrings and weaves. You'll meet a lot more women than you will by wasting perfectly good feathers on hooks.
