What is the size limit on photos posted to a user's profile?

When I attempted to add a photo (401kb), I got a message that stated:
"Maximum allowable single upload size exceeded - gallery item rejected"

It would be cool if the message were a little smarter and stated instead:
"Maximum allowable single upload size is NNkb. The photo you submitted is 401kb - gallery item rejected"

You can now upload a file that is 1meg (1024kb) in size.
