October Fly of the Month 17 Years, 1 Month ago
|
|
This thread discusses the Content article: October Fly of the Month
The October Fly of the Month is tied by Thomas Duncan, the former PastorD, a longtime contributor to the NCFFB and one heck of a good fly tyer!. This is a fly that Thomas gave me some years ago at a Fall Bash. I kept it in my fly collection and recently pulled it out and invited Thomas to profile this fly on the Board. This is my favorite October Caddis and a fitting first October Fly of the Month on the new NCFFB.
Thanks Thomas!

That's a great looking fly Phil...that October Caddis sure is fun to fish once they start hitting, and I mean hitting, the water.

Sonny, the black lab, ran ahead to make sure there were no gophers or jackrabbits in the way. If you don't give a dog a specific job, he'll improvise one for himself and it will invariably be fun. There's a lesson there.

Thanks for the great information on this fly. By chance, is there an archive where other flies/material recipes can be reviewed?

TD/Phil,
OK, so I had to make some material substitutions and I changed the head, but we all put our own twist on any pattern don't we? It looks a little fuller than yours but I think it'll ride in the surface once it gets a little wet and chewed up
But I really like this pattern! Thanks for the inspiration.

Where is PastorD? I still owe him a big thanks for advice on rebuilding a cracked/mangled butt section and reel seat on an Orvis rod many years ago. It still works great and no problems.
Now maybe I should just tie on that fly o the month!

Wow! Now that is one shaggy fly! What is the dubbing material?

Then THANKS again for the rod "re-building" advice!
Appreciated.

Had to substitute for everything except the copper wire
I was struggling on the body dubbing (no ginger SLF), so I hand blended a ton of stuff I had in the kit. It’s a mostly a blend of apricot egg yarn, cream antron, tan rabbit, and a little misc cream, firey brown, hot orange, and red. I’ll probably never be able to replicate it…but I got 8 flies out of that mix. Hen pheasant instead of mottled hen. Instead of cream cdc, used 1 natural and 1 white. Natural deer hair for the thin wing, and the head is just crinkled deer hair in a dubbing loop then trimmed up (twist and bend after you cut off then crush into a little ball in the palm of your hand).
I'm a little worried it might be too bouyant and not play the emerger role very well.

Looks like fun! The creativity on the dubb is awesome -- let us know how it works for you!
