Master of Meander 13 Years, 2 Months ago
|
|
This issue's Master of the meander, meandered furthur than normal. By the end of the article Seth was angling for his dog with an 11wt rod, because there no tarpon in California. I wrote a letter to the editors saying: Thanks Seth for the great article on dog angling. Being new to the sport, I have a few questions: 1. If I fly fish for dog using an indicator will the purist dry fly dog anglers look down on me? 2. Do you know of any easy to tie cat patterns? 3. If I see two dogs mating, is it ethical to fish for them? And if so, which dog do I cast to? 4. Can I use the dog'd tail lenght when bragging to my friends about the size dog I catch? 5. Skunk angling! What's up with that? Its disgusting, am I right? I could have asked a few more questions that would have made it difficult to get my letter printed. So for old times sakes, I'll ask you: If I try to land a dog on a 3wt rod, will I kill it? Mike Borba

reminds me of SLOs first post here....chicken fishing. sidenote: Kienes board hit some high number of posts recently. the subject that put 'em over, me thinks, was the good old NCFFB. SLO made a good showing there messin with the brookies. oldtrout got upset once he thought they called him a low life troller....but I think they just meant SLO.

Berms,
I wasn't upset in the least. In a moment of outrageous indignation I decided to toss a few bull pinecones on the campfire.
I did receive a nice PM from one of the contestants.

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)
"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

I actually had a great e-mail conversation with Seth over the last couple of months. Good guy and a good writer.

I ALMOST got involved in that one, but it would've been like painting a bull's eye on my butt so I just read on, shaking my head a bit.

A steelhead fly fisherman needs two qualities:
A strong casting arm and a room temperature IQ.

That really got me laughing, Mike. Since, at the kennels, they feed the young dogs crunchy pellets, I'd tied a floating pellet imitation. Might as well get them on the surface! A word of warning, bring a hemestat. They've got rather long canines.
