A stimulating question 13 Years ago
been tyeing a few stimulators for the opener and did a
test float on them, some floated great, some were a bit
sparse and did ride low and some rolled over on the side.
So I'm wondering if they rolled over cuz the wing is to bulky or is it the angle of the wing or both ?
any tips appreciated

sure but I'll have to blend up some more dubing first and
get this roll over problem solved... I'm going to test the next batch with some grease on the wing...or did you want the ones that roll over

Mark,

Regardless of whether the hackle was sparse or full, flies tend to roll to the side if the hackle is too long (greater than the hook gap)especially if there is a lot of wing or other stuff that raises the center of gravity.

said I was useing a #10 hackle on a #8 hook so I figured I
had that part wooped, on a couple of these the kackle is slightly longer than the gape.
I'll tie the next batch with a shorter hackle.
Thanks for the tip Paul !
Imagine something round wanting to roll

Hey Mark, I'm by no means an expert,I use stimulators allot and have had similar issues when using a long leader and fine tippets, the effect of your back cast can sometimes spin the fly and put twists in the tippet and cause your fly to roll over,I now trim the top and bottom hackle to eliminate the propeller effect, and I prefer the body of the fly sitting in the surface film

no back cast involved 13 Years ago
Hello Victor, I was just putting some time in at the vise
tyeing Stimulators and decided to float test a few so I tossed
them in...the first one rolled over, the next one sat low
in the film.. it was sparsely tied and started to sink after
30 seconds or so, I can except that and the 3rd one was
purfect so I think Paul nailed it with a hackle that was
over sized. I just going to drop the hackle size and tie
the next batch sparse!
