Thirty years ago I read all things Nick Lyons. Five years ago I started reading John Gierach and have loved every word. I'm now half way through Thomas McGuane's The Longest Silence. I'm not sure why I've never read his works before. Lyons and Gierach set a pretty high bar. McGuane's style is somewhat different than Lyons and Gierach, but close enough that if you enjoy them you will love him. Assuming I'm not the last one to know about McGuane, summer's coming to its end. Time get get reading. Mike

When that book (the McGuane) came out I worked for his publisher. I still have my bound manuscript and the note from the marketing director that was sent with it. Terrific book. I recently read another good "fishing" book, Fishing the River of Time. It was published this year, author is Tony Taylor. It's primarily about fishing on Vancouver Island, but is also about grandfather/grandson stuff, life, fishing, the environment, fishing, history, fishing. Awfully good book. It's not necessarily going to be carried by every bookstore but any store could order it or you could order it from the big nasty, Amazon.com.
