reel advice needed 17 Years, 2 Months ago
Just wanted to get some feed back / advice before I make a new purchase.

I had the misfortune of getting almost all of my gear stolen on the coast last fall and I am finally ready to replace the rod and reel. I originally had a custom wrapped 7wt rod a buddy made and a Ross Evolution reel. I was and still am absolutely in love with the evolution reel but I can't justify spending that kind of cash again on just the reel. That is more like my budget for this entire setup.

I am currently looking at a Cabela's combo.... LST Series/LSR Fly Combos in the 7 wt 9'6" which is under $300 with backing and GPX line included.

Does anybody have any experience with the Cabela's LSR Fly Reel?... looks a bit like the evolution. Any other suggestions of what I should be looking at?

I mainly fish the L Sac and Feather with a few side trips to the Trinity and Klamath Rivers.

thanks

Ya probably already know this, but here's it is

Cabelra has some very nice "Starter" outfits, and for the price you can't do a whole lot better, cost wise.

Now the other hand, if I was fsihing the waters you mention I would want a reel with a very good drag, like a Teton. I would spend more on a good real and less on the rod if I had a limited budget. You can always upgrade a rod and use your first rod as a backup.

I am not familar with the Cabelra reel so I can say if the dragg is ok or not.

just my 2 cents

Teton Reels 17 Years, 2 Months ago
There is a guy that sells these on eBay for extremely reasonable prices.
They may have cosmetic blemishes at this price, but you can e-mail him to find out.

E.F.

To add to Carpy's thoughts, Teton makes more than one model. The Teton is the high end, the Teton Tioga is pretty reasonably priced. It has the same drag as the Teton, but has fewer holes in the frame (ergo: a bit heavier)

I have my 7 wt lines on a Tioga Magnum 6, and they work just fine. I never ran out of backing on the Kisaralik, although I saw it more than once....

If your fly shop does not carry the brand, keep an eye on here.. good prices. limited availability

Do NOT confuse the Tioga LA models with the Magnum. The LA model uses the exact same reel frame, but has a substantially larger center arbor - the spools are interchangeable. the Tioga magnum is a wider reel frame, and is a true Large Arbor reel.

Good luck Oh: Standard Disclaimer!!

Ditto on the Teton Tioga. They are affordable and very durable. An impressive tandem, and you won't be the only one fishing it on the Klamath/Trinity!

I have a Teton #4 and also have two Galvans (OB4 and Torque 8). All are really great reels with the Galvan reels being on the more expensive side. I had the pleasure of dealing with Irene and Debbie at Teton...all I can say is first class customer service. Not to mention a Teton (San Adreas, CA) or Galvan (Sonora, CA) purchase supports local businesses.

I would look at the Albright Tempest reel. I bought one for my Spey rod last year and I am really Impressed with the reel.
The reel was discontinued by Albright last year. But Ray at Sea level fly fishhing LIked the reel so much he went to the manufacturer of the reel and now he is distributor of the reel.

Add me to Teton/Tioga list. I have 3 and after some very rough treatment over the last 10 years the only trouble I had came from accidentially hooking into a fresh Kenai King with my 7wt gear. They told me to send it back in and they'd fix it within a week. Nice folks.

I've got 5 Teton reels (OK, the 8 wt is a Tioga) and know Wes Ament, the owner.

The reels simply work well.
